How To Play Baccarat

Baccarat is a simple casino card game that offers one of the lowest house edges out there. Baccarat has a flashy image as a game for high rollers, but this is down to the low house edge. Because land-based casinos could only earn a small percentage of what was bet in the game, they reserved Baccarat tables for players who would bet big.

This is because space is a valuable commodity in land-based casinos, and casinos couldn't afford to tie up real estate with a game that they could only earn peanuts from. But that's not the case when you are gambling online, and now you can play this fun game for pennies if you so desire.

The Object of the Game

In Baccarat, only two hands are dealt, although there can be up to fourteen players at a table. Each player has their own betting space, and all they have to do is try and guess correctly which hand will win, the Bankers or the Players. They can also bet on the hands being tied.

A hand can be worth a maximum of nine points, and the hand closest to that total wins. The way the cards are valued is a bit different from most other card games, so we’ll take a quick look at that now.

Baccarat card points

  • Numbered Cards from 2-9 are worth their face value.
  • Picture cards and Tens are each worth zero points.
  • Aces are worth one point.

Only two cards per hand are dealt initially and the points are added together to determine the value of the hand. If that goes into the double digits, the second represents the value of the hand. For example, a 7 and a 9 add up to 16, so a hand containing these two cards is worth 6.

If the points for either hand total 8 or 9, it's a natural win and the game ends. If neither hand reaches a total of 8 or 9, an additional card can be added to one or both hands. The player's hand will get another card if the total is 5 or less. The rules around when the Banker's hand gets a third card are more complicated and depend on the result of the player's draw.

The three betting options in Baccarat are

  • Banker’s Hand; A Banker win pays even money
  • Player’s Hand: A Player win also pays even money.
  • Tie: A win pays 8 to 1.
