True Life Roomies Stories

The Bingo Sisters

You may have met them in the chat rooms – they’re pretty well known. Because after four years apart, it’s not the phone that keeps these devoted sisters together – it’s Foxy!

Aimee

I was heartbroken to leave my sister when we moved to England from Belfast in Northern Ireland. I had never imagined we’d ever be apart. We’d talk for hours on the phone every day and still do. It used to worry my Mum. She thought it wasn’t normal be that close. And sometimes people would ask us if it was for show - they couldn’t believe that sisters could be so nice to one other.

Growing up, we were inseparable and did absolutely everything together. We shared all the same hobbies, went to the same places. I guess it was because our Mum, Clara, now 40 was so unwell back then. She has COPD, a chronic lung condition which meant she couldn’t walk for a long time. She’d spend a lot of time in hospital too, so Joy and I got used to looking out for one another.

From a young age, we shared the housework. We’d put on music and dance around and do it. Of course we argued, but we’d always laugh about it afterwards. We were both pretty streetwise but Joy was older so would take care of me more. She was always doing my hair and trying to make me feel special, like my best friend and a sister all in one.

Since I left Ireland, we’ve missed each other so much. But then one day I discovered Foxy. I rang Joy straight away saying, “You have to join. It’s so much fun”. She said she’d never play bingo. But now we’re in the chat rooms almost every day together, sometimes for five or six hours a day. It may sound sad, but I’d rather sit on Foxy on a Saturday night than go out to the pub. I think it’s brilliant, especially as my sister’s on there. It makes me feel like I’m actually with her in person.

Joy

When Aimee asked me to join Foxy, I thought she was mad. Now we’re barely off it. Chatting away in the chat rooms; it’s our favourite thing. We always stick together, stay on the same games and see who can get the most wins. It’s just so much fun. There’s such a great atmosphere and it feels as if we’re actually spending time together. We’ve always been really really close. Everywhere I went Aimee was with me. And now we’ve found a virtual way to keep that going.

We’ll often talk on phone at the same time as being in a chat room. Aimee thinks I make her lucky, she says whenever I come on she wins. We’ve made loads of friends and really like the chat hosts, they’re so much fun. A couple of weeks ago my wee girl Katie, 7 months, had a meningitis scare. Luckily it wasn’t meningitis, but when I went back on Foxy I couldn’t believe how many kind messages were waiting for me. Everyone’s so supportive.

I think Aimee’s going to try and move back to Ireland sometime this year. We miss each other so much, especially since we’ve both had kids, because now we’re missing them too. But we’ll never stop playing on Foxy. It’s too much fun. Us Bingo Sisters can now spend time together wherever we are. It’s the best way to keep in touch. I’d recommend it to anyone.
